Models

Which cars have the 1.2 PureTech wet belt?

Most petrol Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall models with a 1.2 engine since the mid-2010s. Versions badged Hybrid (Hybrid 100, 110, 136 or 145), the new Citroën C3 from 2024 and the new Peugeot 208 and 2008 Turbo 100 announced in 2026 use a timing chain instead. On the wet belt engine you can usually see part of the belt through the oil filler opening.

How often should a PureTech wet belt be changed?

Every 100,000 km (about 62,000 miles) or 6 years, whichever comes first. That replaced the original 10 years or 175,000 km. The belt width should also be measured with a timing belt gauge, through the oil filler, at every routine service.

Why do PureTech belts wear early?

NTN-SNR's technical bulletin links premature wear to rapid oil degradation, mainly on cars used infrequently (under 15,000 km a year) and mostly in town. Unburnt fuel dilutes the oil, the mixture is abrasive for the belt, and the belt gradually disintegrates. The particles can clog the oil pump strainer and the variable valve timing solenoids. Changing the oil at least once a year on low-mileage cars helps protect the belt.

If the belt is out of specification, the sump comes off to inspect the oil pump strainer. A lightly blocked strainer can be cleaned, but the oil pump solenoid valve should be replaced; a fully blocked strainer means a new oil pump. We'll call you before any extra work.

Recalls & warranty

Is there a PureTech recall or extended warranty?

Yes, both exist, so check before paying for a repair.

  • Extended warranty: in March 2024 Stellantis extended cover on earlier PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines for premature timing belt degradation and excessive oil consumption, covering parts and labour for up to 10 years or 112,000 miles, under certain conditions.
  • Compensation for past repairs: Stellantis runs an online platform for owners who paid for certain belt or oil-consumption repairs in previous years, where the maintenance plan was followed and diagnosis and repair were done in the authorised network.
  • DVSA recalls: some 2013 to 2017 Peugeot, Citroën and DS models were recalled because belt material could affect the brake vacuum pump (for example R/2020/326). Check yours on GOV.UK's vehicle recall checker.

If your car is outside these schemes, or you'd rather not wait, we'll replace the belt in Stafford.

PureTech wet belt warning signs

  • Oil pressure warning light
  • Engine management light or reduced power
  • Hard brake pedal or brake assistance warning, where debris affects the vacuum pump
  • High oil consumption, a separate known PureTech issue that the extended warranty also covers

FAQ

PureTech wet belt questions

Does the 1.2 PureTech have a wet belt?

Yes, the petrol 1.2 PureTech (and the 1.0 PureTech) uses a timing belt that runs in the engine oil. Versions badged Hybrid (Hybrid 100, 110, 136 or 145) use a newer engine with a timing chain. Because plain PureTech and Hybrid versions were sold side by side, we check by registration.

How often should a PureTech wet belt be changed?

The revised interval is 100,000 km (about 62,000 miles) or 6 years, whichever comes first, down from the original 10 years or 175,000 km. The belt width should also be checked with a gauge at every service. If your handbook shows a longer figure, it is out of date.

What happens when a PureTech wet belt fails?

The belt usually breaks down rather than snapping. Particles clog the oil pump strainer and can block the variable valve timing solenoids, causing low oil pressure, warning lights and, if ignored, serious engine damage. On some cars belt debris has also affected the brake vacuum pump.

Is there a recall on the PureTech wet belt?

There have been DVSA recalls on some 2013 to 2017 Peugeot, Citroën and DS models with this engine because material from the timing belt could affect the brake vacuum pump, for example recall R/2020/326 for Peugeot. The remedy is a software update, inspection and, if needed, a new vacuum pump and timing belt. Check your car on GOV.UK's vehicle recall checker.

Is my PureTech covered by the extended warranty?

Stellantis extended cover on earlier 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines for premature timing belt degradation and excessive oil consumption to up to 10 years or 112,000 miles, parts and labour, under certain conditions such as following the maintenance plan. Diagnosis and repair go through the authorised Peugeot, Citroën, DS or Vauxhall network, so check with a dealer before paying for an independent repair.

Which Vauxhalls have a wet belt?

Vauxhall models with the Stellantis 1.2 petrol engine, which Vauxhall usually badges 1.2 or 1.2 Turbo rather than PureTech, have a wet belt. They include the Corsa, Astra, Mokka, Crossland, Grandland and Combo Life. Older Vauxhall 1.2 engines and Hybrid versions are different, so we check by registration.

How much is a Peugeot 208 wet belt replacement in Stafford?

Wet belt replacement at AGR Performance starts from £800 + VAT (£960 including VAT). The exact price depends on the engine and on the condition of the oil pick-up, oil pump and vacuum pump once the sump is off. Call Alex on 07368 358943 with your registration for a quote.

AGR Performance. Wet belt replacement at our Stafford workshop starts from £800 + VAT (£960 including VAT), with clear quotes before any work starts. Call Alex on 07368 358943 with your registration for an exact price.

How can I look after a PureTech wet belt?

Use oil that meets the approval in your handbook, change it on time, and change it at least once a year if the car does short trips or low mileage, because fuel dilution of the oil is what harms the belt. Ask for the belt width check at each service and replace the belt at the revised interval.
